Tips for Making a Loud Heat Pump Run Quieter

Does it seem like your heat pump is running louder than it should during operation? Sometimes a noisy heat pump points to problems in need of repair, but other times a noisy heat pump is just that – an annoyance. Either way, our team can help identify a solution.

Just give us a call to make an appointment for AC repair in Moreno Valley. We can get down to the root cause of loud operation with your heat pump and help you address your concerns. You can keep reading to learn more about some examples of how your heat pump may be noisy and what they mean.

Loud Noises: Signs of Problems

Most of the time, loud noises coming from your heat pump point toward something being wrong with how the components are working together to heat or cool your home. For example, a clicking sound can indicate that your heat pump is struggling to turn on for a cycle. Rattling can mean that a small part is loose inside, or scraping points to a bent fan blade that is causing friction.

When identified early, these problems are fairly simple to address. However, if you allow loud noises to continue without being addressed, the problems can worsen and allow damage to spread within the system. Then, instead of making a simple repair, you are investing more in a widespread project to address strain that impacts a greater portion of your heat pump system.

Heat Pump Sizing

If we don’t find any problems that need to be fixed, there’s a chance that your heat pump is simply too large for your home. When any HVAC system is first installed, it is important to make sure it is properly sized for the space it needs to heat and cool. A heat pump that has too much power will operate more loudly because it is designed to be in a much larger space.

There are other problems associated with having a heat pump that is too large, and loud operation is one of the top signs of an incorrectly sized unit. Depending on how old your heat pump is, we can upgrade it to a new model. But if it is still relatively new, it’s a better idea to keep it in place and invest in sound barriers to help it seem quieter.

Heat Pump Placement

It’s also possible that the placement of either the indoor or outdoor units makes it seem louder than it really is. For example, if the indoor unit is near a main living area and doesn’t have good insulation, you may be able to hear it operating to the point that it bothers you. The same goes for the outdoor unit.

If this is the case, or even if your unit is oversized, as we mentioned above, you can invest in a soundproofing cover that helps to reduce noise while also allowing maximum airflow into and out of the system. Keep in mind that you don’t want to purchase just any sound blanket. You want to make sure you get one specifically designed for HVAC systems so that you don’t accidentally add extra strain to your unit.
