4 Common AC Repairs

It’s a good idea for you to be able to identify common air conditioner problems and what they might mean. When you understand how your air conditioner operates – both good and bad – you can be prepared when something does come up and you need to call us first service.

Keep reading to learn more about some signs of the four most common AC problems that can indicate you need to schedule AC repair in Riverside. Remember, you can call our team whether you think you have a big problem or a small problem. We are always here to help, even if you just need a question answered.

Broken Capacitor

If the capacitor on your air conditioner wears out, you may begin to hear a humming noise. This humming sound precedes the capacitor ceasing to work completely. If you hear humming coming from the outdoor portion of your unit, our team needs to replace the capacitor.

If you let the problem continue thinking that it’s not a huge deal, your air conditioner may stop working completely. If this does happen, don’t panic. Fixing it is usually as simple as replacing the broken capacitor with a new one.

The capacitor is a very important component that provides your air conditioner with an extra boost of power when it turns on for a cycle. Without the capacitor, your air conditioner may not be able to turn on at all. Once we switch it out, your AC should work even better than before.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant leaks can display a few different signs. You may notice an overall lack of cooling. Your air conditioner will probably still blow out air, it just won’t be as cold as you think it should be. You may also hear bubbling or hissing sounds coming from the spot in the line where the refrigerant is leaking out.

Refrigerant leaks are a problem for a couple of different reasons. First, refrigerant is the way that your air conditioner cools air. Without enough refrigerant in the lines, your air conditioner will never work effectively. But refrigerant is also a harmful chemical that poses risks to your family. If you think you have a refrigerant leak, turn the system off and keep kids and pets away until we can get it fixed.

Attached Ductwork

Sometimes air conditioner problems are actually problems with AC attachments. One example of this is the ductwork. If you notice weak airflow coming out of the vents around your home, your air conditioner may not be to blame. Instead, the attached ductwork may be the problem.

If there are broken seals, then air is leaking out before it ever has a chance to reach your home. Having significantly higher energy costs is another sign that your ductwork may be leaking out a lot of cooled air. This can be a problem across your entire home or in specific rooms where the ductwork has the most damage.

Thermostat Calibration

Your thermostat also contributes to how well your air conditioner can operate. If your thermostat is not calibrated correctly, it reads the indoor air temperature wrong and may signal for your air conditioner to turn on and off at the wrong times.

If it doesn’t seem like your air conditioner is working correctly but there are no really obvious signs of anything being wrong like loud noises or a lack of cool airflow, it may just be that your thermostat needs to be fixed. If calibration is not the problem, we can try changing out the batteries or swapping your thermostat out entirely for a newer model.
